How to choose a pram footmuff
A footmuff is the single most useful thing you can add to a pram for autumn and winter. But they're not all the same. This guide walks you through what actually matters — fit, warmth, weatherproofing, size and washing — so you can pick the right one and keep your little one cosy on every walk.
The short version
- Fit: choose a universal-fit footmuff with both 3-point and 5-point harness openings, so it works with almost any pram or pushchair.
- Warmth: a polar-fleece lining is plenty for most UK winters; a deeper plush lining is best for very cold days or babies who feel the cold.
- Weather: look for a waterproof, windproof outer shell, not just a soft cover.
- Size:a longer footmuff (around 95cm) lasts from newborn through toddler, so you're not rebuying every year.
- Care: machine washable is non-negotiable with a baby.
What is a footmuff?
A footmuff is a padded, weatherproof cover that fastens into a pram or pushchair and zips around your baby like a warm sleeping bag. It keeps a child cosy and dry without the wriggling, kicking and dropped blankets you get from loose covers. You'll also see them called cosy toes or bunting bags — same thing, different names.
1. Fit: will it work with your pram?
This is the question that trips most people up. A footmuff has to do two things: attach securely to your specific pushchair, and let the seat harness pass through so your baby is still strapped in safely.
The simplest answer is a universal-fitfootmuff. Rather than being cut for one brand of pram, it's designed to fit nearly all prams, pushchairs, buggies and strollers, with slotted openings for both 3-point and 5-point harnesses. That means you can move it to a new pushchair later, or use it across siblings, without buying again. The Croc N Frog footmuff is universal-fit for exactly this reason.
2. Warmth: fleece or plush?
Warmth comes from the lining. Two levels cover almost everyone:
Polar fleece — soft, breathable and warm enough for typical British autumn and winter walks. This is the regular Croc N Frog Footmuff.
North Polar Plush— a deeper, thicker, plusher fleece for very cold days, frosty early mornings, or babies who feel the cold. It also has a plush collar that frames your baby's face. This is the Premium Footmuff. A good rule of thumb: if you're regularly out in genuinely cold weather, size up on warmth — you can always unzip to cool down, but you can't add warmth that isn't there.
3. Weatherproofing: the outer shell
Warmth is wasted if rain soaks straight through. The outer shell matters as much as the lining. Look for a waterproof, windproof Oxford fabricouter — rain beads up and rolls off, and wind can't cut through to the warm layer inside. A wipe-clean shell also means muddy days don't mean a wash every time. Every Croc N Frog footmuff uses a waterproof Oxford shell for this reason.
4. Size and age: how long will it last?
A footmuff that's too short gets outgrown in a season. A roomy one lasts across more than one winter. The Croc N Frog footmuff measures 95cm long by 43cm wide(37.2" x 17") and suits babies and toddlers from roughly 0 to 36 months. Newborns sit snug and tucked; toddlers still have room to stretch. The full-length zip and a front panel that folds down also mean you can open it up on milder days rather than taking it off.
5. Washing and care
With a baby, machine washable isn't a luxury — it's the whole point. The Croc N Frog footmuff is machine washable: wash on a gentle cycle and air dry. The wipe-clean Oxford shell handles the everyday splashes between washes.
Footmuff vs cosy toes vs bunting bag
These all describe the same product — a warm, zip-up cover for a pram or pushchair. "Cosy toes" is a popular UK term, "bunting bag" is more common in the US, and "footmuff" is the general name. Don't let the different words confuse the search: look for universal fit, a waterproof shell and a warm lining, whatever it's called.
