How to choose a pram footmuff

A footmuff is the single most useful thing you can add to a pram for autumn and winter. But they're not all the same. This guide walks you through what actually matters — fit, warmth, weatherproofing, size and washing — so you can pick the right one and keep your little one cosy on every walk.

What is a footmuff?

A footmuff is a padded, weatherproof cover that fastens into a pram or pushchair and zips around your baby like a warm sleeping bag. It keeps a child cosy and dry without the wriggling, kicking and dropped blankets you get from loose covers. You'll also see them called cosy toes or bunting bags — same thing, different names.

1. Fit: will it work with your pram?

This is the question that trips most people up. A footmuff has to do two things: attach securely to your specific pushchair, and let the seat harness pass through so your baby is still strapped in safely.

The simplest answer is a universal-fitfootmuff. 3. Weatherproofing: the outer shell

Warmth is wasted if rain soaks straight through. The outer shell matters as much as the lining. Look for a waterproof, windproof Oxford fabricouter — rain beads up and rolls off, and wind can't cut through to the warm layer inside. 4. Size and age: how long will it last?

A footmuff that's too short gets outgrown in a season. A roomy one lasts across more than one winter. 5. Washing and care
